We had some beautiful light for this family session! And with a few top on posing families, we gave them images that show the family connection!
Lauren and her kids took advantage of the outdoor portrait park in between the rain last weekend – and we had beautiful light for photos!
I always love when we get a little rain right before a session, and this session took complete advantage of that. It was literally raining just minutes before the family arrived…and so we had a little of wet ground to deal with, but the saturated colors in the background were just beautiful. Can you see the color pop? Lush greens and rich browns (but note that skin tones are all still normal).
Getting beautiful light for photos is partly about finding good available light, but it’s also about making good light. As with all my families, I always shoot with additional light sources and diffusers. If you don’t, you can see the difference in the skin tones and the contrast.
Posing matters as much as beautiful light for photos
The other key to family photos is the posing. It’s not just about putting people in a row or group and clicking the shutter. They need to either look completely natural, like they didn’t expect the photo, or they need to be purposefully put together with a connection. Do you see the shape of this first image? It’s a diamond, so it draws the eye up to mom, and around to the kids.
Do you see the placement of the hands – each subject is holding someone else…again, a nice touch to say “hey, we belong together”. If the arms are just falling loosely by their sides then the image is completely different…and almost distant. Bringing connection to the photo for a family is really important.
It’s even more evident between image #1 and image #2. While I will always take a variety of posing set ups for families, my favorites are the ones with connection.
Here are two of the Price family favorites – I hope you agree they have a beautiful family.
