I’m often passed over for bookings because there is more and more “competition” in my field. And I welcome different artistic styles, offerings, and overall business options. I know not everyone will want what I have to offer, and that’s ok.
But lately I’m seeing more and more of folks either not using professionals or even settling for camera phone photos for these really important moments.
Both as a professional photographer, but also as someone with a little bit of life experience I just feel compelled to share my advice – LET THE PRO DO IT.
A professional will not only be completely prepared for anything that might arise on your session day (weather, family conflicts, and more), but the results you will get will be far superior – FAR superior to what your phone or your friend can do. You’ll get the right equipment, lighting, process to show you proofs, and final results with professionally retouched images presented in products that are proven to be lasting and durable.
Specifically for high school seniors, do not miss this opportunity to document this time in their life. A lot of changes are about to happen – as a parent you move to “advisor” role as my good friend likes to say – and she’s right. You no longer will know where they are all the time, nor have access to what is going on in their daily lives. This last year with them – when they are so stressed out about making really big decisions for themselves, well – stop time for a bit and just let them just be them. Document this time with their “last school photo” and take advantage of the opportunity to truly show them and their personality in those images.
Photographing high school seniors involves so much more than just taking the photo with a “good camera”. I’ve put together places to take the photos (indoor studio and the portrait park) with NUMEROUS options for whatever clothing or accessories they might bring. (This is the same for family portraits, by the way). I’ve worked on camera techniques and lighting techniques to bring out their personality, but to also ensure you have great images for any products you might want from the images – wall portraits, books, even graduation announcement cards.
My experience in this field – after photographing almost 1000 seniors to date helps me with just anything that might arrive on session day. From a closet full of clothes and accessories to a kid who arrives with a backpack full of crumpled t-shirts. From the senior who is actively interested in the session, to the one that wants it over with as quickly as possible. I’ve seen a little bit of everything, and I still love what I do.
I want everyone I work with to see the value they get from working with a true professional. I’ve thought through your portrait experience to give you the most, for the least. No, I’m not free. And I know my pricing won’t work for every budget. But everyone who has come to me knows I will work with you and your budget and help you get what you need, and want, within that budget. You can still get great images, so please do not settle without seeing what you can get first.
Get great portraits, fun photos, real memories – and I promise you that you will not be sorry you did this in 2 years, 5 years, even 10 years from now.
I hope you’ll see the value. And I hope I’ll see you soon.
